L’article vise à restituer ce cadre en insistant sur le passage d’une période de nette flexibilité orthographique vers une autre où émerge un standard et, corrélativement, un enjeu social croissant dans la pratique orthographique. Ce paysage permet de considérer l’évolution des pratiques familières du temps avec un regard plus averti. During the 18th century in France, printers and writers display a high level of flexibility in the way they spell their texts. Not only do written productions differ considerably from one another but till the end of the century the dictionaries themselves can display quite a range of variants for the same word. The French Academy has not yet its full authority and shows little concern as to creating standard orthography. Nevertheless, the 1740 and 1762 issues of its dictionary tend to become more influential. Une distinction est faite à cet égard entre les grammaires publiées avant et après la grande réforme de l’orthographe adoptée par l’Académie française dans la troisième édition de son dictionnaire (1740).
